I love Puck of Pook's Hill. I couldn't find the book, as you say, but I've spent some time with the Project Gutenberg e-text linked hence. It's good to know that I have Rewards and Fairies to look forward to (somehow I hadn't made that connection, duh)--thanks!

While not my favorite Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night's Dream is my favorite faerie story because of the way love is portrayed. Does anyone else think it is messed up that Demetrius remains under the love spell?

I like the fairy godmothers in Sleeping Beauty. They try so hard to be helpful, bless their hearts. But I also like Maleficent, scariest of the Disney evil witch queens.

(An illustrated novelization of the film is one of the first books I can remember reading on my own. There may have been a popup dragon. This version of the story has remained a favorite.)

I like Claudine (or is it Claudette?) from Harris's "Sookie Stackhouse" series (Trueblood on HBO). She's so brassy and sexy and non-ethereal, it's a great change from your typical airy-fairy.

Would you like to leave us a set of initials, a nickname, or another identifier, so that we can announce you as the winner, if you win? (We might have several anonymouses!)

Thanks! :)

Ok, secret: I don't actually like faeries. At least, I don't like the romanticization of faeries (or other sub-human species) in genre fiction today, as if their immortality, mindblowing beauty, vanity and lack of human compassion are GOOD things. Because those attributes are not appealing to me. If I ever encountered any one of those creatures my first instinct would be to run quickly in the other direction. The 'good' (well, benign) faeries I admire for both their influence and good judgment in using that influence.

That said, my favourite faerie story is the Ballad of Tam Lin. Currently reading Pamela Dean's Tam Lin, but the original ballad holds a really special place in my heart. Steadfast, mortal love triumphs over faerie imprisonment, plus a kickass girl heroine, pre-marital sex, and a happy ending. What's not to love?
