Hmmm. Since I live in Virginia, any mention of "The South," when in reference to the United States, just automatically makes me think of the states involved in the Civil War. Which everything below the Mason-Dixie line, plus Texas. It's mostly an East Coast thing. But I would imagine Jasper thinks of it the same way, since he was fighting that war. The line between Texas and Mexico tends to blur quite a bit - I've never been there, but I've gotten the impression that Texans think of Mexico the same way New Yorkers think of Jersey. Y'know, technically in the same general area, with a lot of the same population, but worlds apart culturally speaking.
Well, I'm from a northern state, and I considered the word the exact same way. "The South" means something different to me than "Southern states," but I'm not sure if that's what SM intended. Definitely coming from Jasper, it would make sense.
I've never really thought of the Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico) as "The South". The same thing for Florida. I would consider "The South" for the purpose of vampire wars to be: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia...maybe South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas. If we think of it as any state that seceded in the Civil War, that line could be drawn even further north.
I would agree with the definition of the word. But at the same time, if you are Maria had have hold of Texas, would you not take over New Mexico too? Would you fight the others for parts of Mexico or Louisiana, or would you just claim territory in 'free' land. I can't imagine Maria leaving NM untouched while she held Texas.
Now did she hold the entire state? Texas is huge. I know they talked about capturing cities...did they ever reference taking whole states? If not, the definition of "The South" for the purpose of the vampire wars could be a lot more fluid.
It mentions taking the majority of it. Here's the exact quote:
"Success made Maria greedy. It wasn't long before she began to eye other cities. That first year, she extended her control to cover most of Texas and northern Mexico. Then the others came from the South to dislodge her."
an interesting point -I would assume she only got to Texas before she was blocked by the quote you pointed out but good point about Phoenix + Florida coz I would see all southern states involved in the cival war (from VA)Phoenix would be off and I think the treat is less for Edward than Jasper as he knows the real danger. anyway I am from the UK so I can not fordge much knowledge in this area
