Fantastic story. You had me scared there for a while when the store manager grabbed Dean by the arm. At least the man realized Dean wasn't stealing, that he was just hungry.

Aww, yeah, the grocery store manager insisted that he was a really nice guy. He wouldn't put up with stealing, but he was full of compassion when he realized what was going on with Dean. Poor kid, though. It was a very scary moment for him too. Thanks so very much for reading and commenting.

I just wanted to say that this is the first SPN fic to catch my interest in a looong while, and it was as wonderful as I expected it to be. Thank you for writing this, it was so sweet! I nearly teared up when the store manager gave Dean a whole box of food... ;^;

I liked it, very sweet. Poor Dean, so concerned with doing what was right, but needing to take care of Sammy too. I liked the "Oliver and Company," and crunch berry references, brought back some memories there, and thank God, John finally came back. I felt bad for Dean having marked off how many days it was before his dad got home and then marking off the days after his dad was expected home, poor little guy. Thanks for sharing this.

I'm sure John had a very good reason for not being back on time. The hunter lifestyle doesn't lend itself to being on time. It really struck me in the pilot how common Sam makes it seem for Dad to disappear and be gone for too long. I got the sense that it happened a lot and probably had happened since they were little, so I kind of wanted to play around with what would have happened if Dad did disappear for a few days when the boys were little.

It started off really sad with the boys starving and Dean not knowing what to do, but then it kind of ended up being syrupy sweet on me. The grocer insisted he was a nice guy and would help wee!Dean out. I thought that was so sweet and kind of heartwarming and Christmas-y.

I'm really glad you enjoyed my 1988 references. I love playing with nostalgia from life and putting it into what the boys were doing at the time.

Aww, thank you. My mind told me this trip couldn't possibly go completely smoothly without any kind of glitch, but the store manager insisted on being a really nice guy. Glad you enjoyed it.
