how does this protection impede you?

it limits how many times you can install it. if you go over this limit, (which is 3 usually) you have to call EA games and plead with them to add another, at a nominal fee. As well if you want to have more than one account linked to the same game, you have to pay extra, up to 200 bucks for additional licenses.
