The first discussion on my LJ was based around the following quotation:

'Theoretical knowledge is a necessary condition in creative activities.'I'm not so sure it's necessary. On a very simple level, you can be creative without consciously knowing theory. Certainly this is true of stream-of-consciousness free verse poetry, and perhaps art as well ( Read more... )

Yet my knowledge makes my music so much better. If I sat there not knowing a thing about music, I may be able to hit out a melody. Now that I have my grade 5 theory and grade 5 piano, I know the major and the minor keys, the cadences and how to compose, I know how to do broken chords and join the tune and the verses and the chorus to sound like a proper song, and so I think knowledge is extremely important factor in music

I still argue that creative activities necessitate theoretical knowledge, and not the other way around. :P

And that seems an interesting inversion of the question that I'm not going to disagree with. After all, as creative activities develop, conventions are formed, and that would appear to be the basis of 'theoretical knowledge'.
