The background screen was a leftover from some art show at Peir 2/3. Its one of the few pics ive ever taken using filtered flash...

No, we got the lid open, after 45 minutes of diverting traffic and sledgehammering the fuck out of the bastard, but as a precaution we lowered a ball of flaming cotton (kero soaked) down the shaft on a length of cable. About 5m down the fire went out. Multiple repeats of this determined a certain lack of air. There was no air down there back in 1992 when Diode n Predator tried it, so... Ive got a pic of the shaft somewhere... its about 10m deep, bare sandstone walled and about 10ft in diameter, no ladder.

Good thing you checked for air hey...10ft in diameter? The vertical shaft? That sounds pretty big for something underneath a manhole, do you mean to say the bore itself was 10ft dia?

Nah the tunnel is supposedly an average height of 5-7ft with a few real low sections n the odd 10ft section. It was dug by convicts with convict supervisors. The convict supervisors reported back to Busby on its progress, n subsequently never told him that the labourers had dug nearly a km of spare tunnel in the wrong direction just for the fuck of it.

Yeah Prowler an explorer from Melbs, been doin it for like 15 years. Explored nearly ever drain in Melbs n Sydney, always wears an AC-DC or Kiss shirt, stubby shorts n his bum bag (fanny pack). Fuckin champ too.
