I loved this article! I'm guilty of this. I have cupboards full of things I haven't used in years and it's starting to iritate me really badly!! I've already made huge piles of clothes to give away, but I still have Too.Much.Stuff

Oooh, a fantastic article. I'm terrible at throwing stuff out and my main concern when I eventually buy an apartment/house is going to be: "right, is there enough room for all my books here?" Need to stop accumulating. Yes.
Living week after week out of a suitcase in hotel rooms has really taught me that A) I don't need a lot of room to live. Plenty of well-off people in New York City have teeny tiny apartments and live just fine. B) I don't need a lot of stuff. I do just fine with my laptop, cellphone, some clothes, a place to sit and a bed. Oh yeah and food.
I also think a 1500 foot house would be fine for a family of 3 or 4. Growing up, my family of 6 (minus a sister who had moved out) lived in a 3 bedroom apartment for a year and a half. Two to a room, and we were just fine!
As the population increases and energy costs go up, I think the smaller living spaces closer in to town are really going to skyrocket in value.
...and I, too, am guilty of having cupboards and closets packed with clothes and other things I do not need. For awhile, I watched a couple episodes of CleanSweep and really cleaned out some of that. But I have far to go!
I think if I spent that much time in a hotel I'd want a nice spacious place to come back to even more, heheh. But yeah, you're right. If I was on my own I'd do fine with a the New York style teeny apartment.
One of the reasons I've been thinking about this is that if we ever do move out of the country there would only be a minimal amount of stuff I'd take - the stuff I really wouldn't want to part with. So I need to start getting rid of the stuff we don't need now, otherwise it will take me 6 months to liquidate! I need to watch Clean Sweep re-runs - that always motivates me too. :)
This article hit close to home! I have a lot of stuff I simply don't need. I have two sets of Asian dishes that never see the light of day!!! So I'm craigslisting everything that is not something I use and love! Sadly, I think everyone is experiencing the same thing. I wonder if I should donate them to be given to folks who have lost everything? I know that seems ridiculous... asian dishes and bowls at $39.99 and $49.99 a pop from Williams Sonoma for someone who has nothing but god, what else do I do with them? There is no way I can throw them out knowing there are so many going without.
No you don't sound rididculous! I would craiglist those types of things. If you're like me you could use the money too. I don't mind giving away a set of dishes I paid $40 for, but not for each plate! It's just that I have so much stuff that I never use and it's not worth even ebaying. I'm going to go through a bunch of it this weekend and either give to a relief fund if I can find one that's taking goods, or give it to Goodwill.
I have a ton of Drue's old clothes that I am hanging on to for no good reason. Those can go to the Salvation Army's donation drive. I just feel silly taking these dishes to them as well but if they don't sell then off they go! Hopefully someone will actually use them as opposed to me who wasted a ton of money on them and then leave them to collect dust in the cabinet! :(
I definitely need to be pickier in regards to what I spend my money on. I'd rather have less and higher quality things that I use than a ton of stuff I don't ever touch but bought as shopping therapy or something.
And yes, with a kiddo there is never enough cash. *sigh*

Oh absolutely, me too. I have the shopping gene. I love a good bargain, but the problem is when I see stuff at 70% off I get excited and end up buying shit I don't even need because "it's such a good deal!" Heh. Need to stop doing that.
