Two teams with 5 people each play against each other, one of each team is the jammer, they start behind the pack (the blockers) - they try to get through to the front, but the blockers of the other teams are trying to block them, and their own team is trying to whip them through.
Once they are at the front they try to lap around as many times as possible. One round lasts 2 minutes, or until the lead jammer calls it off. A games takes 2x 30 minutes
These are the basic rules, it's obviously a bit more complicated than that :)
