While the junkyard was mostly huge piles of crap, there was now a little (temporary) clearing about ten minute's walk from the entrance into zone one. On one side of the clearing a little metal building had been constructed, ten or so feet high, with thick reinforced sides and a thick roof, all apparently designed to keep the random crap that fell from the sky from hitting the person underneath it.

Inside, Maria stood underneath the makeshift protector, her head tilted to the side, her brown hair falling across her face as she looked out into the clearing. Both her nano-machine colonies were out there, swarming through the air like two clouds of very softly buzzing bees, and Maria seemed to be directing them with her hands. She didn't have to do that, but when she was working on a project, it made her feel more...involved ( ... )

"So, like cars. The insides are all pretty much the same, it's the outside that gives them character," Oh, if only Maria knew how many car-guys would yell at her for that statement. Luckily, she didn't.

She finally reached the top of the pile of scrap, balancing unsteadily on what might have once been a toaster oven as she looked up at the space ship. Huh. It wasn't as exciting as she had hoped...but it was still exciting.

"If I cut the glass frames out, can you catch them?" She had no idea if they'd shatter from falling...wouldn't they have to be stronger than that?

Now, if she'd said they were like tanks, or like air assault vehicles, Thom might have taken exception to that statement. As it was, his experience with things beyond the UNSC's motor pool was pretty limited.

"Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. Just let me know which ones you're after."

The plate glass that was standard issue in the viewports back home could easily be four, five hundred pounds a square meter. Not quite the intended use of the MJOLNIR, but he didn't mind the work.

[Well, Maria didn't know they could be that heavy. She's just assuming glass is glass. She points at a window halfway along the ship.]

That one first. This will take a few seconds.

[The other swarm rises from her arm and dives towards the ship, forming a square and then slowly sinking into the metal that surrounds one of the windows. The substance seems to melt away beneath their touch, and after maybe a minute, the glass pops free of the frame and drops down the side of the ship towards Thom.]
