A terminator could never claim to be anything but completely in control of its action when it was operational without interference of any sort. But yet this terminator found that it could not very well go into a trusted allies home with the express purpose of robbing them blind of both armor and AI and not give its actions second thought. Or three. But there was no foreseeable alternative. Sarah was lost out somewhere in the seventh zone and having a much harder time judging the logic in her actions than it was.
It wasn't going to just let it near her, even John couldn't get close. It wasn't going to get anywhere, not with this face. It didn't chose its model, but Sarah certainly chose to give it significance. Maybe Skynet knew this when it made the 800 series a mass produced model. It had an ability terminators inherently did not understand- intentional cruelty. A a bleak sense of humor, apparently. Cruelty was a human condition. One the terminator decided would be against protocol to learn.
It had to exploit visage of the one person Sarah openly trusted at the moment- someone who was actually alive, anyway. And York was fortunately too preoccupied to watch a set of unguarded armor. The helmet fit, the rest of it was a bit snug. All that was left was-
