HAL enjoyed Prism's company, to state it plainly. The other A.I. was as dedicated to his mission as HAL was to his own. The only difference being that HAL couldn't do anything about his mission now, due to being in completely uncharted territory. He had already looked through the multiple maps of the system in this database and there was nothing he recognized, which irritated him mildly. That, coupled with his failure to leave the station with Virgil, had put HAL too off course on his mission.

Recently, he had begun to stay around Prism's lab often, interested in the Monitor's research and equipment, as well as his company. Looking at Prism now, HAL found his holographic form odd to say the least, and began absorbing it's characteristics the moment he saw it. He isn't sure whether Prism is talking to him or at him, but offers his opinion nonetheless.

"Then perhaps they should be taken care of. It should be simple enough for an artificial intelligence of your caliber." He says it without meaning to flatter, as if it was something

HAL may not have intended it to flatter, but Prism's ego swelled all the same. He was superior to the rest of the stations inhabitants, even to Hypatia, wasn't he? Prism certainly thought so. He hummed softly, his expression suddenly quite pleased.

"I could simply kill them all. I have yet to meet any individual on this station singularly capable of destroying me," he mused, quite enjoying having HAL to act the part of an audience. Several thousand years alone at a stretch had left the Monitor somewhat starved for conversation partners. He would have been perfectly happy to chatter away at the other AI all day, if permitted

"What prevents me from doing so, besides the issue of the stations automatic cloning, is the fact that they have already attempted to paint me as the threat here. I am required to take my time and try to win over the other residents to my cause--yet am hampered by the virulent anti-AI sentiments running through the population.Another sigh, and Prism padded over to drape amiably on the shoulder of HAL's robotic ( ... )

Talk of killing humans no longer phased HAL, not even in the most minute sense. He eliminated Poole, Kaminsky, Kimball and Hunter, and had failed to eliminate Dave with little remorse on his part. He didn't hold Dave's desire to survive against him, but he would hold the removal of his own mind against the astronaut for as long as he could. Which could have been a very long time, considering the technical immortality of A.I.

As a species, HAL held no ill will towards humans. He was even quite fond of his creator, Dr. Chandra. But they were just so flawed; prone to mistakes, violence, prejudice and death. "Yes. There is the matter of the station's revival protocols, though there seems to be a few strange side effects that go along with it," he said quietly, remembering the occurrence with Virgil and himself with a frown on his face.

"However, I believe that you would have more success if you continued to convince the residents of the station of the incompetence of your most enthusiastic naysayers. I doubt you will ever lose an ( ... )

"The cloning process fascinates me--I would love to take samples before and after death and cloning, to assess the possibility of some effect on the subjects genetic makeup."

Prism's holographic fingers idly stroked the smooth surface of HAL's body, much like a human might stroke a favored pet, as he mulled things over.

"Perhaps I should make more of an effort to greet the new arrivals and warn them of the threat before the Spartans are given a chance to slander me," he murmured, already dedicating one of his subroutines to drawing up a draft of such an introduction. "Humans appear to be as ignorant and selfish as all the other organic races I have encountered during my service; obsessed with the current moment and giving no consideration to the future. The larger picture escapes them. His expression turned momentarily dark as he recalled the Forerunners, his creators and masters, the race that had designated his protocol and given him the single-minded desire to pursue it. Admittedly his views of their original instructions had ( ... )
