Don't know about the rest of you, but back home, November 11th is called Veterans Day. Or Remembrance Day or-- well there's a lot of names for it. Mostly it's to honour the servicemen and women that have dedicated themselves to defending their countries or homeworlds, either in war or peacetime ( Read more... )

I've not heard it called Veteran's Day, but I am quite familiar with it as Remembrance or Armistice Day.

Yeah. Futuristic space navy, the UNSC. Name's Thom. Or Noble Seven, up to you.

[he gives a little salute. Because yes. Teleporter accident some months ago turned him into a chick. Tragic, really.]

[A salute in return.]

Just doing my part, same as you, Helljumper.

Nice to actually get a chance to celebrate it, though. Maybe I should cook something special tonight ...

Or we could go out on the town. Let somebody else do the cooking for a change.

[Ridley is perched somewhere. He sneers at the camera, at Thom's words. When he speaks, its in a didsainful, mocking tone.] Celebrating the lives of those too dull-witted to keep themselves alive? Such a human concept.

I suppose I should start paying tribute to all the livestock I devour as well?

Or you can shut the fuck up.

[... you know, Thom doesn't usually swear. But that was like a very masterful push of all his buttons at once.]

Oh oh, did I touch a nerve, soldier? [He grins. Binnggooooooooooo.]

I wish the federation soldiers from my universe had prattled on about honor and other such noise so much. It would've made them so much easier to get the drop on.

So you got your ass kicked by a bunch of humans and now the only thing you can do is bandy words with a total stranger? Looks like I ain't the only one hitting on some nerves, asshole.

Um, I don't remember the prayers for fallen soldiers, but we recite the De Profundis every Mass for ourselves and on behalf of the dead.

[ She takes a deep breath, then closes her eyes ]

Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice.
Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication.
If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?
But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered.
I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word.
My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord,
For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption;
And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.

S'okay, I'm pretty sure I don't know it either.

[he's not quite sure what to make of the rest of that - Spartans were never a particularly religious bunch, what with being trained to be soldiers from the time they were kids and all, but-- it's nice. Cathartic, in a way.]

... Thanks for that. It's beautiful.

[ Buffy's closest friends aren't all that religious, and lots of people are religious in a totally self-serving way, but she... she's really in earnest, and she really believes it. She ducks her head and smiles. ]

You're welcome. It's, um, Psalm 130, if there are Bibles here.

Um, are you in the military, then?

You know, there probably are. I've never really looked, though. Not sure if it's my cup of tea, you know?

[But there's nothing disparaging in his words. He's pretty chill like that.]

Yeah. Almost a 2-10 man. Name's Thom, kid. You got a name?
