I love the bonding that happens between the two men here and their shared gratitude when Laura begins to improve. Billy may not understand why they've been granted such grace but he's not about to argue with it. He loves Laura with the kind of unselfish affection that makes him capable of honoring the love that Bill has for her, too, and I know Bill feels the same way about Billy.

I really loved that small tidbit where you show us Bill stroking Laura's hair, Billy watching, Bill pulling away, and Billy wishing he'd continue. It's such a perfect portrait, in miniature, of the dynamic at work behind-the-scenes here.

This fic could slip right into canon.
