Oh there's plenty of 'good boys'. After the incident in the park, I made sure to give him a couple of praises when he did things right. And Saturday morning when he came home, I alternated between "OMG you STUPID F'ING DOG!" and "C'mere so I can kiss you again".
I did! Did I not e-mail? god I've been so bad about that this year - sorry! I LOVE IT! I think people got tired of hearing about it since I left the box on the counter for a couple of weeks and hauled everything out whenever someone came over.
Wow. Would a "gentle leader" or "halti" work for him? The thing that works like a horse halter on their face, making every passerby ask why you have muzzle on your dog

He actually came from his previous owners with a Gentle Leader. I'm a huge fan of the prong for my abominably-furry Beasts with 3" of neck hair but thought I'd give it a try

Akitas are notoriously tough but I had no idea he'd be this difficult. His former family did him zero favors by not instilling some of the doggy behavior basics. Three years old is way too old to be pulling half this stuff.
Once he decides to quit challenging me for the alpha role, things will get better. For now though, it's like a constant tug-o-war - until I have to place frustrated calls to my trainer to tell her I'm at the point of beating the crap out of my dog.

Is his breed normally abnormally tough to train or is it just because he's a tad old for training?
