Yanno, I thought about the same-sex daemon thing and went, "...nah," because Lyra only knows ONE person with a same-sex daemon out of everyone at Jordan college and all the Gyptians and so forth and so on, and that ratio is just not right.

Good point. I think my rationalization of that is that, well, the ratio in literature that bothers to have any gay characters at all is generally not as high as it is in the real world, unless you're reading gay fiction. Or maybe, you know, there were people Lyra didn't know well enough, or she didn't think it was important enough to mention the other times, or something...

Yeah, yeah, I just want more queer characters. I know. Sigh.
