I just saw a Nestle Crunch ad on TV. It featured two men sitting around in what is presumably supposed to be a desert in Nevada. They ask each other if they're ready, then they bite into their Nestle Crunches and a huge crack appears in the ground. Nope, I just recently saw that ad here, too. I'm pretty sure that one of the guys is Shaquille O'Neal. Well, if CA floated away, it wouldn't be connected to the Republican states anymore! Freedom!

The ad is pretty funny from a geologist's point of view because it doesn't make any sense for a huge chunk of land to just "float" away. I mean, it's solid all the way down, it's not floating on top of the water. And anyway, the only part of CA that are moving relative to the rest of the continent is the coast from about San Mateo south. Santa Cruz is moving towards Alaska, and so is Los Angeles. Eventually those Angelinos will have to learn what long pants are.

Yeah, I really liked how California split off precisely at the state line. :)

Your version is, I think, what they always told me in school. My hometown is, I believe, located directly on the San Andreas, so I didn't really look forward to the plates moving.
