Wednesday Reading Meme

It's all comics this week! I'm sure you are shocked.

What I Just Finished Reading

Iron Age: I have a big list of comics I should read to write my Big Bang. This is not one of them. This is the one where Tony ends up timetraveling through his own past and is basically the story of how he epically fails at life. Which is always a good Tony Stark ( Read more... )

I'm sorry. I would read books but I keep getting distracted by comics.

Comics are actual books! I have fallen so far behind on Marvel comics that there's no point in trying to catch up just yet, but I am intrigued by the idea of Daredevil as a chef -- oh, and maybe Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps (if it's only #1, there's still time!)

This is kind of a confusing time for Marvel because they've blown up the entire multiverse and shoved bits of it together on a planet ruled by Doom. So basically most of the existing titles are canceled and now it's Secret Wars and there are all these AUs with very weird premises (wild west! gladiator Steve Rogers and his buddy Devil Dinosaur! a land where Civil War never ended!) and Carol Corps is one of them. The Secret Wars Journal series just has these little random AU oneshots and that's where Daredevil the chef is; I doubt they're coming back to him, but I could be wrong.

Huh. So if it's been well over a year since I read any Marvel titles, would you say it's better to wait till the current Doom-and-AU-fest blows over, or just dive right in?

I'd say it depends on how much you like Doom and AUs. I like 'em, so I'm sticking with it!

Marvel insists of course that this event has now changed everything and after it ends there will be no such thing as 616 or indeed the rest of the multiverse, and there will be only one universe (All New All Different Marvel) assembled from bits of everything: the future All New All Different Avengers roster, for example, includes both Kamala Khan (616) and Miles Morales (Ultimates).

Iron Age sounds (and looks) kind of awesome *g* Might add that one to the list. Bring me all the Tony/Tony (T-squared? *g*)

Avengers: Disassembled is almightily depressing, even if you know that they reassemble and it's all fine for even a while before CW etc etc etc. Still want to write the fic where the whole 616 timeline is sent on a different (non-CW, happy joy happy tiemz) track by the power of gay love and adults using their words... maybe over the next month or so... *g*

Iron Age is awesome! I recommend it!

I keep feeling I should actually read Disassembled one of these days, but then I'm like "I know what happens, and no." Like, last night I actually said "well, I could read Disassembled, or I could keep writing this fic where Steve PINES HIS FUCKING HEART OUT" and then I went for the fic. I will read it at some point, though.

CW fixits are an honorable tradition (I say, as I eye my Big Bang plans nervously) and I would totally read yours!

I just want to let you know how much I enjoy your comics posts. They're fun and informative and I always look forward to them, even if we don't quite read the same books.

Having said that, I dumped Secret Wars 2099 and Journal. I don't know what's going on and the art isn't to my taste. 1602 Witch Hunter Angela, on the other hand, is gorgeous and has amazing art.

Aww, thank you! Sometimes I think I should tone them back because of all the people on my flist who read current comics I am pretty sure I read the same comics as NONE OF YOU and you're all like OH GOD HERE SHE GOES ABOUT THAT ASSHOLE TONY STARK AGAIN or possibly HOW IN THE WORLD DOES ANYONE LIKE ULTIMATE STEVE ROGERS. :P (I like when you post about comics too!)

I would have read Witch Hunter Angela but have not actually read the original 1602 yet despite Lysimache's brother telling me to every single time I have seen him recently.

No, don't tone it down! The enthusiasm is part of the fun :D And I wouldn't even consider giving Ultimates a shot if it wasn't for you, so there. Enthusiasm is what makes fandom fun, after all.

Truth be told I only picked up 1602 Witch Hunter Angela because I follow the artist on tumblr (she's amazing), but mostly because the internet told me that Bucky would show up and I couldn't resist. I haven't read either the original 1602 book or the Angela Asgard's Assassin one, but I don't think it hurt my enjoyment of the book at all. In fact, I liked it so much I'm going to pay actual money for a paper copy of the book. It's sort of historical fantasy, I guess? I really missed reading that kind of weird history-fantasy hybrid story.

Whee, comics!

Okay, then. :)

I will be interested to know what you think of Ultimates. It, uh, it really grew on me and I have absolutely no idea why.

Oh, that does sound fun! I like how Secret Wars means that we're getting all these really interesting different kinds of stories and things that are not just about punching people in the face. I'd never have expected that from a place called Battleworld, actually.
