Fine. I made a Tumblr.

Look. I made a Tumblr, because I got sick of checking individual Tumblrs for updates. If you are one of those Tumblr-using fen, feel free to add me. Or, you know, suggest awesome Tumblrs I might like. What might I like? I mean, come on, you guys know what fandoms I'm into. (Eagle? Eagle? Anyone ( Read more... )

To be completely honest, you can't do too much public interaction on Tumblr, but it's a nice platform for spreading stuff :) So, I don't know if we can *do* fandom there apart from following one another and putting up some fandom-oriented content for others to reblog ;)

However, I might be doing Tumblr wrong, I'm pretty much a lurker/liker myself, I follow some of The Eagle people and a bunch of blogs of interest (feminist, queer, pop culture, fashion etc.).

Couldn’t you put the tumblrs into your rss reader? The urls follow the pattern http://username.tumblr.com/rss

Personally, I use my Tumblr as a commonplace book. And to be honest, I think a lot of people use theirs similarly. Tumblr makes it so easy to collect things.

Yes, you do edit the HTML by yourself. It’s very DIY. Which is . . . But if you could edit the html yourself, you’d already code yourself your own theme from scratch? Whereas most people who don’t want to or can’t deal with HTML would rather just tweak a default layout and be done with? I dunno, I think Tumblr is half-baked at this point.

Missing E will make your life a lot easier. I installed it and turned everything off at first. Until I find something about Tumblr that annoys me and lo and behold-Missing E usually has a setting to fix that.

Be careful about how you use tags. Tags are for:
1. organization for your blog.
2. social networking for all of Tumblr.3. whispering commentary to your followers ( ... )

I could if I actually had a RSS reader I liked. I generally just use LJ for that. And I figured it would be easier to follow them on Tumblr.

I was expecting Tumblr to be a little less DIY -- I mean, even LJ has fairly simple basic sidebar options. Oh well. Not like I don't know some HTML.

Thanks for the Missing E link; I have now installed it. :)

Tags are key on Tumblr. You can track tags, just search on whatever and then add them to the sidebar of your dashboard and it will let you know when new stuff is posted in each tag. What you do is, you track some tags, you reblog or like stuff that you like, and if you're noticing that some people in particular are producing stuff you consistently like, you follow them.

Tags can also be used as meta-commentary.

I am not sure how to add anything to the sidebar of my dashboard. Hopefully I will be able to figure this thing out. But thanks for the tips!

I have a Tumblr, but it is mostly about unfucking my habitat (and occasionally reposting random things). So I will follow you, but you have no obligation to follow back because it is totally boring.

I still don't understand how Tumblr works and hate the UI and how it does interaction. It's great for finding awesome photo blogs and snark about women in comics who all have sexily broken spines.

I followed you back! And I was already following the broken spines ones. :)
