However, I might be doing Tumblr wrong, I'm pretty much a lurker/liker myself, I follow some of The Eagle people and a bunch of blogs of interest (feminist, queer, pop culture, fashion etc.).

Personally, I use my Tumblr as a commonplace book. And to be honest, I think a lot of people use theirs similarly. Tumblr makes it so easy to collect things.
Yes, you do edit the HTML by yourself. It’s very DIY. Which is . . . But if you could edit the html yourself, you’d already code yourself your own theme from scratch? Whereas most people who don’t want to or can’t deal with HTML would rather just tweak a default layout and be done with? I dunno, I think Tumblr is half-baked at this point.
Missing E will make your life a lot easier. I installed it and turned everything off at first. Until I find something about Tumblr that annoys me and lo and behold-Missing E usually has a setting to fix that.
Be careful about how you use tags. Tags are for:
1. organization for your blog.
2. social networking for all of Tumblr.3. whispering commentary to your followers ( ... )

I was expecting Tumblr to be a little less DIY -- I mean, even LJ has fairly simple basic sidebar options. Oh well. Not like I don't know some HTML.

I still don't understand how Tumblr works and hate the UI and how it does interaction. It's great for finding awesome photo blogs and snark about women in comics who all have sexily broken spines.
