So earlier this evening we watched Christopher and His Kind, a recent (autobiographical, I guess) movie about Christopher Isherwood going to 1930s Berlin to be gay gay gay. You have probably heard of it because it stars Matt Smith as Christopher Isherwood, and is therefore of interest to people who want to see the Eleventh Doctor being very very ( Read more... )

I have never heard of that. Is it worth it?

Not really, IMO. It's Christopher Eccleston playing a man who gets married, can't get a divorce, falls in love with his cousin, lives in sin, his children die, he's turned out of his home, and I actually didn't finish it because it was so much misery porn.

But! There was a scene where, well- just watch:

Whaaaaaaaaat there is an Isherwood&Auden movie now??? HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS THEY ARE MY FAVOURITE QUEER LITERARY COUPLE. (True story: my reaction to finding out Auden, my favourite poet, was gay: "Oh, well that explains that then.")

Well, it has Isherwood and Auden but they mostly aren't together; it is mostly about all the pretty German boys Isherwood sleeps with. Also, Nazis. So I do not know if it will satisfy your Isherwood/Auden craving, but it is a pretty good movie.

I knew I recognised the guy who played Auden! Enjoyed that, thought he was decent. Though can't say I know much about him.

Omg does this mean that I need to watch less Eagle :p

Yeah, I don't know anything else about him either, but I thought I would share with everyone. :)

This film send me into a little tailspin, and I watched Chris & Don and "A Single Man" in short order. For anyone who ever writes a May-December romance, "Chris & Don" should be required viewing.

Matt Smith was spot-on in his understanding of Isherwood; I wish they'd investigated the latter part of his life, not just the early bits.

Aww, that movie sounds like something I should watch; I was curious about the rest of Isherwood's life too.
