I'm starting to wonder if writing down all of the dramatic, emotionally driven thoughts I go through on a regular basis is as cathartic and healthy as some claim ( Read more... )

In actuality, the "catharsis" view of emotional regulation is all but discredited- punching a punching bag or whatever actually makes you MORE aggressive and the like. I do believe journaling is psychologically beneficial in other ways, but cathartic? No lol.

Remember what we've talked about BB... you tend to focus on the "big picture" of your goals and let the baby steps fall to the wayside, something I think all of humanity does to some extent. Just focus on the first step to your goals for right now, you'll probably achieve it faster than you think and even accomplishing something relatively "small" will improve your self esteem. When I was first sober even waking up in the morning before 1pm raised my self esteem lol.

What are the other ways journaling is beneficial? So far it tends to make me feel like the big piece of shit I am... in a sense I guess that's good because I'm not simply ignoring the fact =P

I know, WHY am I such a big picture thinker? Those damn small details are too annoying and bothersome but everything is built from smaller components in the universe...why not apply the same basics of our reality to my life.

I think that for most people, journaling can provide a sort of physical manifestation of your problems, and if you write them down you see they DO end, or they don't look as bad as they feel. For most people, at least. I think it also provides a way to "organize" your thoughts.

I dunno why you're such a big picture thinker, maybe because it's more fun to "fantasize" about the results than do the mundane baby steps, like saving money for school?

I guess just remember that accomplishments like a degree or whatnot are really just a long, long series of babysteps? Saving money, studying, etc. And I guess don't get discouraged that the baby steps don't make you feel as accomplished as the end result... taking your first quarter at community college may not feel as prestigious as obtaining a law degree, but it's the first step towards that goal.
