I'm trying to make an icon w/ round edges and I believe I should use transparencies to do that, is AI the best way to get something like that accomplished?

is it square edges right now? if it is, select your object, then go to file menu
Effect > Convert To Shape > Rounded Rectangle > Enter a number
there are other ways too just lemme know...
