Birth Culture
We are coming upon the end of the year.  A time for reflection.  A friend of mine online just had a baby girl!  She had hoped for a vbac (vaginal birth after cesarean for those not in "the know") but ended up having her beautiful girl by repeat c-section.

Which made me think about birth within our society.  And myself as a birthing ( Read more... )

I apparently am a mutant, with 6 lumbar vertebrae. My body does not go into labor, basically, something isn't wired right through my lower nervous system ( ... )

You misunderstand. I'm not trying to belittle your birth or your experience. I am saying that despite c-section rates being much higher than they should be no one should give the women who have them a hard time. I had a section. Sometimes they ARE neccesary. Women DID die before them. I'm saying they are done far too often without proper informed consent and for frivolous reasons on the medical establishment's part.

yeah well...my 2nd child was delivered at least 2 weeks early in part because my back was miserable, but mostly because the doctor had other patients scheduled for births or other procedures closer to the due dates and wanted me at the OR the 2nd weekend of January for her convenience.

I appreciated her honesty in telling me all this as scheduling was going on. It increased my respect for her work with me, even though I realized I was no longer classified as a GOOD hippy-new age kinda chick anymore...
