omg! how this! Thomas & John were friends (old Navy buddy & unknowingly worked the same cases while John was a cop). Steve was always enamored by his father's friend with the kick ass red Ferrari. Thomas frequently came over to take Steve surfing or to play volleyball with TC & Rick.

Magnum was also the one who got Steve interested in becoming a Navy SEAL, but Steve was also intrigued by the stories that TC & Rick shared from the Marine POV of Vietnam.

Obviously John didn't know his son was hearing so much of Magnum, Rick and TC's Vietnam "adventures" bc he tended not to talk much about it.

Uncle Magnum also attended some of Steve's football games with John and Chin, but he stuck around after the games where John didn't.

(I honestly didn't know Magnum, TC and Rick had Military background, thanks Wikipedia!)

Higgins would probably try to sophisticate Steve. make him into a proper young man or something. Oh and I'm sure Steve would try to sneak around the house only to be cornered by Zeus and Apollo.

also, in between the time that his mother died and he was sent to Maine, Steve spent even more time with Magnum at the guest house

I can see a present day Magnum 100% on Steve's side and livid at Joe for the shit he's pulled recently. Joe may have shaped him in Coronado or whatever, but Magnum was probably someone he could always count on.
