does he really get that angry, that fast?

as I've been beta reading a lot more fics, I've noticed something that annoys me a bit (yes, I'm adding it to my list of things that fanfic authors do that annoy me). When Danny is written, he goes from "normal" to ranting at Steve, or at least it's written that ( Read more... )

I try to avoid the trop-y cliches in my writing. So I hope this isn't something I've done. But all things considered when it comes to Danny talking to Steve not about work, I want to say that abouut 8 times out of 10 he does devolve into a rant of sorts, in canon. So there is some support for it..

But I get what you are saying. I get kind of annoyed when Fic!Danny constantly refers to Hawaii as a pineapple infested he'll hole. He did it once early in season 1. I feel like, in Canon, his character has grown past that. So authors need to move past it too. If the fic is based any time after about 3/4 of the way through S1 don't have Danny use that phrase to refer to Hawaii. That, and the tie thing. It was cute in the first 10 stories I read, now it's just old.

Sorry for the wonky punctuation, I'm on my tablet.

I don't think I've ever noticed that in anything you've written.

I think I need to pay better attention to canon!Danny because it seems like a bit much for him to rant about non-related work stuff.

...refers to Hawaii as a pineapple infested Hell hole

GUILTY! But I will say that after 25 years in Fort Lauderdale I still refer to it as Hell on Earth, especially during the summer months. Although on a side note, I try, at some point, to have him admit its not so bad (and yes, I do the same damn thing in RL LOL).

Yeah, his character really does do that. When they did the crossover, I really noticed that.

When he goes off, it's mostly about Steve's way of doing things.

well that's understandable, most of the time. But the way some of these fic writers put Danny, he "rants" at the simplest of questions and I don't think that's canon!Danny at all.

It's kind of a trap. There's sarcasm and full on rant mode. It's the subtle difference that makes a story pop. Not to mention that Danny doesn't always call Steve an idiot, etc. Remeber when Steve threw that smoke gernade to snuff out a suspect in late season 2? Danny stood here with a smirk. No rant. No 'you an insane blah blah'

He saves the rants for the really crazy stuff.

That's along the lines of what I've noticed.

it seems like authors are so quick to put "Danny ranted" when I think what they really meant is "Danny said sarcastically"

I think sometimes it's is also just someone, an intelligent and quick-witted man who likes to talk, playing with words and being colorfully descriptive. Even when he isn't yelling he is being the wordsmith. And he also uses it to disarm people, they're nt expecting the 'see we know it was you and I'm gonna make sure the jury sees just how cruel you were' when he's been all blah blah hands hands. Tony in ncis does the same. I call it verbal flash bang.

I maybe write too many carguments but they are just so darn fun!

I totally agree about Danny being a wordsmith.

the cargument is cool. If possible, every fic/episode should have at least 1 cargument lol

I want to do something I'm good at I like to be reminded that I'm good at what I do. A prime example. It's poetry. Like Eliza dolittle's dad haha.

I know RL people who do speak like that, and I have done it myself on occasion. Its just a part of some folks personality.
