well, i definitely agree that they handled this announcement poorly. but at the same time, with the way things have been going i'm not surprised that they didn't want to bring it up.

i honestly can't tell if they underestimate the community at finding out what they're doing or if they seriously don't understand that everyone talks to one another here and word travels fast.

either way, some kind of formal announcement would have been preferable to anything that they've done.

as to the invite option, i hated it. it took me years to get a lj invite code. and i wasn't going to pay for something that i hadn't tried.

so my main points boil down to: user notification.

they don't say anything really. it's more of a "you may have noticed we changed the registration process." and the comments, of course, tell the full story. and lj has its' traditional sacrificial employee answering the first few questions.

i have no idea. the faq didn't really address that.
