When you uninstalled the games, did you go into the install folders to make sure all of the files got deleted before reinstalling? If you used the older method for installing custom content (using the helper monkey, or putting them by hand into the install folders) you may have left over files causing issue.

You deleted the entire Sims 3 folder in Documents?

Yes, I did. I went into the program files directory and deleted the EA folder, and also deleted it from my documents. I just think it's strange and have no idea what could be going on.

Did you make any changes to your system at about this time? Perhaps some of your security software blocks the game? A system restore might help.
