This went somewhere I wasn't expecting

So, Andrew W.K. was speaking here on Monday night. Andrew W.K. is apparently a musician, a motivational speaker, and a professional party-er. As I discovered Tuesday morning, I apparently already have one of his songs downloaded on my Zune. So, yeah. He has that level of fame, I guess, in that he's always been around, but you're likely not to have ( Read more... )

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think you owe humanity anything. I think you have to live your life the way you see fit. Mostly, I think you should try to enjoy your life, however it is that you have to do that.

Just because everyone else buys into the work real hard so you can buy lots of random stuff paradigm doesn't mean that you have to.

See, it's not about the buying crap measure of success thing. I mean more, like, it's important to contribute something ... more meaningful? The whole, "leave a place little better than you found it" concept, maybe? And I guess doing what you enjoy, and living the life the way you see fit makes doing that more likely?

I guess what I'm against is the idea of just getting by. I'm not sure yet though.

I find that it takes a while to figure that sort of thing out. But I totally agree with the leave the world a little better than you found it sort of thing. But I find that people too often lose or confuse that with work real hard and buy lots of stuff ( ... )

You know, the more I think about this, the more twisted it gets around in my head.

I mean, okay, strive to be whatever you want to be and don't be lazy. But there is a difference between being lazy and having time for fun or for yourself.

If trying to make the world a better place means you have to do something you don't like, it's probably not going to make the world a better place. Because all that does is give the world one more unhappy person, right?

But then, if that's what makes you happy, of course you should do it.

God I'm idealistic, aren't I?

Egh. Abby can go ahead and put pressure on people but IMHO your only responsibility to humanity is not to drag them down by being an asshole or over-indulgent. Anything else is just gravy.

Gail Vaz Oxlade says you'll always have to do things you don't like, but what you've gotta do is turn that 'fuck I hate this' into 'I have to get somewhere better' and get motivated about stuff.
