Dresden Files; Harry Dresden/Karrin Murphy

Sep 02, 2006 22:25

A het pairing in this journal? Blasphemy, you say. And usually, you'd be right. But Murphy is just about as girly as I am (I daresay I'm a bit girlier), and their relationship is just will they or won't they enough to keep me interested. Anyway, this is me being a productive member of society and actually completing a claim, so here goes, 50 sentences on Dresden/Murphy.

Fandom: Dresden Files
Pairing: Harry Dresden/Karrin Murphy
Theme set: Beta
Rating: G

A/N: Written for my claim at 1sentence

#1-Walking

It's become a habit for the two of them, walking Mouse together in the moonlight, going over the events of their respective days, talking out their problems or Harry's latest case, giving each other the support they never knew they needed.

#2-Waltz

She feels like a complete idiot, her small, stocky form shoved into black satin and strappy shoes, blonde hair piled atop her head in something she hopes approaches stylish, but all of her fears subside as he pulls her into his embrace, a lanky man in an ill-fitting tuxedo, all legs and arms; if they are ridiculous, at least they are ridiculous together.

#3-Wishes

He wishes sometimes for normalcy, for something more to offer her, for a calm center in the chaos that is his life; she wishes sometimes for powers like his, for a longer lifespan, for a chance to love him without ruining their lives.

#4-Wonder

Harry kisses her for the first time, and she is shocked at the expression in his eyes; it is neither satisfaction, nor smugness, nor even pride; all she can see is pure, childlike wonder.

#5-Worry

Murphy will never admit it, but worrying over Dresden has begun to occupy an appalling amount of her time; she can't imagine she could worry more for him, even if she were in love with him.

#6-Whimsy

She is arrayed in a gown the color of moss, moonlight gems at her throat and wrists, golden tendrils of hair pulling loose from atop her head, wisping about her lovely face; across the table, she eyes him narrowly, saying, "What are you staring at? You'd better not be imagining me naked."

#7-Waste/Wasteland

He stands in the midst of a wasteland, knees buckling beneath him from sheer exhaustion, overwhelmed by guilt from what he has done with his own hands, with his own magic; she puts her arm around him, and he is amazed that she can even bear to touch him.

#8-Whiskey and Rum

He drinks whiskey, she drinks rum, but neither one can seem to drown out the demons that crowd their minds; she kisses him, and for the first time in years, their demons are silent.

#9-War

Harry has known for some time that it would come to this, all the signs and portents pointed to war as the only possible outcome; but standing over the body of his best friend and lover on the battlefield that used to be Chicago, all he can think is that someone could have warned him.

#10-Weddings

Their wedding is a strange and awesome affair, the bride and groom both wearing black, their family and friends a melting pot of the magical, the mythical, and the mundane.

#11-Birthday

"Another year older, another year wiser," she says with a smirk, and the mischievous sparkle in her eyes is the only gift he'll ever need.

#12-Blessing

Charity gives Murphy the once-over, her steely gaze causing the other woman to tense despite herself; after a moment, she relents, saying, "You're better than he deserves."

#13-Bias

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knows that he's a weird character, not just in looks, but also in temperament; however, it's one thing for her to say it, quite another for someone else to say it.

#14-Burning

He wakes from a dead sleep, dripping in cold sweat, the searing in his hands as painful and immediate as the day it happened, but Murphy wakes with him, and her hands are cool and soothing.

#15-Breathing

Telling her to watch her breathing was probably not the smartest thing he could have done, Harry realizes, ducking the bed pan launched at his head.

#16-Breaking

He's dealt with pain a thousand times, in all of its many forms, but he has never known pain like this; a broken bone will heal, but she's packing her things and she's actually leaving and his heart is breaking into a thousand pieces, and he knows without a doubt that this pain will never fade.

#17-Belief

"I believe in you," Murphy said, and that memory alone has sustained him through weeks of excruciating pain and torture; when she comes to his rescue, gun blazing, it occurs to him that he should answer in kind.

#18-Balloon

"What the hell is this?" she asks in disbelief, scowling at his bemused grin, but her face lights up when he pops the balloon (and the question), revealing her ring inside.

#19-Balcony

She allows him to kiss her for the first time on the balcony of a burning hotel; hours later, the flames from the hotel fire have abated, leaving only embers, but Murphy's mouth still burns as if seared.

#20-Bane

"You drive me insane, Dresden, you're the bane of my existence," she yells, throwing the phone book across her desk at him; he catches it neatly, grinning like a fool, canines flashing, and she falls in love all over again.

#21-Quiet

He's not like her other husbands, she thinks, because when he's angry with her, he doesn't yell or bitch or whine, he just gets very, very quiet; maybe it's because he only gets angry with her when she's done something really stupid, or really brave.

#22-Quirks

He bites his nails down to the quick, she worries at her fingertips with her teeth; he brushes his teeth with the lights off, she brushes her teeth in the shower; he leaves his towels on the floor, she folds her dirty clothes; "I love you madly," he says, "Don't forget your coat," she replies.

#23-Question

"Do you love me," he asks her one day, apropos of nothing, and she doesn't answer him right away (although the extremely pissed-off vampire clan heading their way may have had something to do with it); that night, in their bed, she answers him without words.

#24-Quarrel

Fighting with Murphy is like fighting with God, useless and a waste of time and energy; he sits quietly, arms folded, listening to her rail at him with utmost patience...he knows it drives her absolutely nuts.

#25-Quitting

He's floating comfortably, making his way toward a bright light when her voice finally reaches him, "Dresden, you ugly bastard, if you die on me, I swear I'll resurrect you myself just so I can wring your scrawny neck!"; he can't argue with a lady, even if death would be so much easier.

#26-Jump

"Jump!" he cries, "I'll catch you!" and it's all she needed to hear; Harry Dresden never says anything he doesn't mean, and she's never seen him go back on his word; later, as her adrenaline finally flags, she realizes that was probably the most idiotic thing she's ever done in her life and punches Dresden in his skinny arm hard enough to bruise.

#27-Jester

"Nice costume," she says, rolling her eyes, but is secretly flattered; he's court jester to her king, and no one at the party fails to notice what a nice pair they make.

#28-Jousting

"You've got to be kidding," Murphy snorts, then blanches as she realizes that he's not; stupid wizards and their stupid old-fashioned ways, she thinks, as she pins her badge to his shirt with shaking fingers (women of old would have given a ribbon or handkerchief, but she hopes her badge will give him a bit more protection than that).

#29-Jewel

A diamond as big as a quarter, that's what she'd always said she wanted as a little girl; she looks at the ruby he's slipped on her finger, red as his heart's blood, and knows without a doubt that for this man, she wouldn't take a diamond as big as her head.

#30-Just

"You're a just man," she whispers into his ear, holding him as the tremors subside; it doesn't escape his notice that she does not say that he is a good man.

#31-Smirk

It's the smirk she gives him over her coffee cup that finally sends him over the edge, that evil glint in her eyes as she makes some scathing pronouncement on whatever they're talking about; he starts, as she puts her small hand on his, and he explains with some embarassment, "Sorry, Murphy, but it just hit me, we're actually married."

#32-Sorrow

He's lost her, and he can't help but blame himself, the Council would never have taken her if he hadn't been so stupid as to declare his love for her; she's gone, and it's his love for her that's killed her.

#33-Stupidity

"You're like an idiot savant, without the savant part," she says, thumping him in the forehead as she tries desperately to squirm away from his advances; later, under the covers, he is grinning like a fool, and he has to agree with her, "I'm stupid in love with you."

#34-Serenade

She agrees to go out on a date with him, but on one condition, "Promise me that you'll stop singing underneath my window, for the love of God, Dresden!"

#35-Sarcasm

They have surprisingly similar senses of humor, when you get down to it, dry and sarcastic, some might even say dark, but it comes from cheating death a few too many times, and even on a battlefield, he knows that he can get a laugh out of her, and that is all the reason he needs to keep fighting.

#36-Sordid

It's all very ugly and sordid, their names splashed over the tabloids, and who would have thought that Murphy and Dresden's mugs would have made front page news; "Chicago Cop Caught Cannoodling With Wacky Wizard," she reads, barely able to contain her giggles.

#37-Soliloquy

Dresden is muttering under his breath again, and it's really starting to get on her last nerve; she jabs him with her elbow, whispering, "Enough with the soliloquys, Hamlet, we've got demons, werewolves, and I think that may be a troll."

#38-Sojourn

Their honeymoon is a surprising sojourn into the unknown territory of normalcy; Harry nearly finds himself wishing for a demon possession, or a haunting, or something even remotely supernatural, and Karrin daydreams of murder suspects, interrogations, and traffic tickets.

#39-Share

She promises to love and honor, but not to obey; he promises to cherish and keep her, but refuses to have his vows end with death; in the end, the only thing they can agree on is that they will share their lives together.

#40-Solitary

Despite their friends and colleagues, they have both lived mostly solitary lives, relying solely on themselves to provide for their needs and wants; it's difficult for the both of them, remembering to include the other in their personal problems and concerns, but it might be the only thing that gets them through.

#41-Nowhere

"Where the hell are we, Dresden," she growls, but he can tell that she's frightened, her voice just a little too steady; "Nowhere," he answers truthfully, and she grips his biceps with fingers like vises.

#42-Neutral

His girls are fighting again, their feminine voices raised enough that he can hear them downstairs; Murphy's throatier tone reaches him first, perhaps because he's more attuned to her, but it's Molly's even timbre that sends his heart into his throat, "Well, let's just ask Harry, shall we?"

#43-Nuance

Over the years, he's learned to gauge her moods, listening and learning every shade and nuance in her deliciously throaty voice.

#44-Near

It's cold, and even in her Cubs jacket she's shivering, without a second though, he offers her his coat in his most insufferably gentlemanly way; she surprises herself by refusing the coat, and snuggling in close to its owner.

#45-Natural

She wakes up in his bed, and is shocked at how easy and natural it seems, no guilt, no remorse, no question in her mind as to who she's waking up beside; she opens her eyes, and he is looking at her, and she knows without a doubt that he feels the same way.

#46-Horizon

"Riding off into the sunset, Dresden?" she asks with a smirk; he holds out his hand to her, and they limp off toward the horizon, together.

#47-Valiant

She comes to his defense, a human alone among wizards, and she is completely and utterly without fear; the Merlin takes two steps back in the face of her anger, and Dresden is too puffed up with pride and love to fear anything any more.

#48-Virtuous

He carries the Sight of her with him, a warrior woman in white, and it sustains him through many a battle; she cries like a child in his arms, tells him that she feels dirty, sullied by what they have done to her, and he murmurs into her ear the vision of her true self.

#49-Victory

The victory is sweet, but Harry is unsure of himself in this brave new world, not knowing quite what to do with himself without a fight; Karrin starts an argument in the ambulance, and he gets the idea that he's just traded one type of fight for another, far more pleasant sort.

#50-Defeat

There is nothing he hates more than admitting defeat, but he can tell when he's beat, and he's tired of making a fool of himself over Murphy; years later, they meet, and he realizes just how much of a fool he was.
