Mary Lennox's boarding school.

They've been discussing the plan for some weeks now, he and River, and more lately Galadan. As a theory, then as an uneasy possibility, and finally at the level of we will need the following supplies.

He talks with Kaylee about it, once it gets to that point.

What can I do? she asks, and he has to tell her he doesn't know. She asks to tell her if something comes up that she can do, and he promises he will.

Later that night, going over the plan and frowning down at his notes, he thinks of something.

It doesn't take more than a few hours for Kaylee to remove the electronic guts of two communicators and re-house them in new shells, rewiring the leads to camouflaged controls.

When she's done, there's an ornate pocketwatch and a small silver-backed hairbrush sitting on the workbench.

A cover story to explain his presence. A letter, written on old-fashioned heavy paper with unfamiliar writing implements; several attempts, referring repeatedly to examples of the archaic handwriting, before Galadan pronounces it sufficiently convincing and pockets it.

Clothes from Bar, the differences from formal clothing of his own where and when subtle but unmistakable. They go with the two communicators, in the closet of their room at Milliways, to be ready when needed.

The ongoing hope that this will all turn out to be unnecessary.
