Ooo, I've always found, "Write what you know" stupid and misleading. I most certainly don't know what it feels like to be shot, and I hope I never do. But I do know what extreme pain feels like - breaking a foot, etc. And for you, we know what your extreme pain is. So, we can take that, use our trusty imagination, and voila, a believable gunshot wound. But we do have to live to experience that pain to start with - and for most of us, it's living with stupid accidents.
I don't comment as often as I should, but it's always nice to see your links because they're different from what I usually find elsewhere in my travels. Thank you for posting them. :)
Not only that, just getting off your bum and going somewhere new, actually seeing different landscapes and meeting people from different cultures can make so much difference in how you are able to imagine a setting or develop a character. Miles and miles of research from the safety of a computer chair has nothing on actual experience.
No worries :) I try to find things that are more about inspiration than actual advice, and that can come from the most unusual places sometimes.
Seriously, no amount of research at the computer is going to give the full experience. No smells, no sounds, no overall "feel" for an area. Something I actually know I'm missing out on for the most part, so I do try to stay within my overall experiences. :)
