Volf felt his thigh vibrate and pulled out his cell.
Volf: Hello.
Nebleb: Volf, where’s Jill?
Volf: They’ve moved her around a lot over the last few weeks. She’s staying at Olive’s old house right now. What’s going on?
Nebleb: The President is taking steps to kill Jill and members of HRP tonight.
Volf: What!
Nebleb: You have to warn her, even if it means revealing your true identity.
Volf: This may ruin the mission.
Nebleb: I understand but we have to keep Jill alive long enough to reach yearend.
Volf: Understood. I’ll call you back in a few hours.
Volf hung up the phone and headed for the front door.

Olive’s house - 7:45 PM
Olive wiped down the table and shook her head at the half-eaten bowl of soup that Jill left at the table. Jill was curled up on the sofa staring at television but not really seeing it. Jill hadn’t eaten in days but Olive continued to coax her into taking small bites of food to keep up her energy. She’d spent several nights holding Jill as she cried herself to sleep.
The funeral for her father had been that morning and Jill was an emotional wreck. She’d tried to talk to her mother at the funeral but Jenny walked away without acknowledging Jill’s presence. Johnny promised to speak with her soon, but she felt utterly alone.
Olive fixed a glass of wine for herself and an herbal tea for Jill. She placed the tea by the sofa and grabbed the remote to find a scary movie. She stopped when she heard the phone ring.
Jill: I can get it.
Olive: No honey, you try and drink some of that tea. Its an old recipe my mom used to make, it will help you rest tonight.
Jill: Yes ma’am.
Olive walked to the kitchen. As she picked up the receiver, she saw Jill sitting up to take small sips of tea.
Olive: This better be good. Halloween XIV is on!
Tonya: Olive, your time is up.
Olive: Like I haven’t heard that before.
Tonya: Well, this time you might want to take it seriously. You must have forgotten what you were ordered to do by today. Olive, we’ve known each other a very long time so I’m going to try and help you. They are coming for you and Jill tonight. The President is in town and she came by here not five minutes ago. She’s testing out some badass genetically engineered soldiers and she’s ordered them to kill all the local members of the HRP. After that they are to find you and Jill. They’re still here accessing our files. Soon they’ll know everything about you and the others. You must leave immediately if you want to live.
Olive felt sick to her stomach.
Olive: I know you took a risk warning me. Thank you old friend.
Tonya: Good luck.
Tonya hung up and felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. She didn’t have to turn around to realize what was happening. All calls out of the building were monitored. She only hoped that she bought Olive enough time to save herself.
Tonya: This is it then. Get on with it!
Olive hung up and immediately called Thomas. After explaining the situation she hung up and headed back to the living room. They’d only been staying at her old house for a few days, so Jill could be close to her family until the funeral was over. They planned to go back to Lyla’s house tomorrow morning. Now Olive realized that was a mistake.
Olive: Jill, we have to leave.
Jill’s eyes got wide but she asked no questions. The day after Olive promised to protect Jill, she gave Jill a set of rules to follow. The most important was to follow Olive’s orders without question. If she said they had to run or move quickly, Jill was to do it with no resistance.
Jill ran to the guestroom and quickly put on a tee shirt and jeans. She stuffed a few items into a duffel bag as Olive did the same in her room. Several minutes later they heard the squeal of tires out front. Olive peered outside.
Olive: Its Thomas. Let’s go.
Jill grabbed her things and followed closely behind Olive as they headed past the graveyard. As they neared the car a black dog came up behind them and began to bark.
Olive: Move it Fido.
As they tried to move past the dog it began to change. Jill stifled a scream as she watched the dog change into Volf.
Jill: Volf?
Olive: You know him?
Jill: He was my boyfriend.
Volf: Jill, you’re in danger.
Olive: How’d you know that?
Olive inched toward Volf, carefully lacing her fingers around the revolver that was tucked away in her jeans. Both of them were stunned as Volf changed again, this time it was his true image. Jill looked horrified.
Volf: Jill, I’m sorry I lied to you. Your father knew what I was from the start. He asked me to watch over you. I’m here to do just that. The people coming for you are dangerous and highly trained.
Olive: Look, you can fill us in on the way. We have to leave now but try anything funny and I’ll have your ass. Come on.
