December Challenge (again)

Dec 02, 2005 16:06

After my abominable slander of Orodreth yesterday I thought I should write something rather more respectful about him today.

Title: Nauglamír
Author: fanged_geranium
Rating: General
Warnings: HoME
Summary: Orodreth talks to Celegorm and Curufin about Felagund

Nauglamír )

Very nice! I think this is the first Orodreth who wasn't a wimpy pushover, whom I can actually like. His speeches were lovely. Perhaps he was under the influence of Nauglimir? :)

Would he have called his uncle/brother Felagund? Or Finrod? Not that I have a problem with the name Felagund or anything.... ;)

Thanks! I was thinking something like that, but I didn't want to make it explicit.

I don't have the books with me to check, but I think that Finrod was still Inglor Felagund at that point. (and Finarfin was Finrod) I didn't want to confuse the issue by using Inglor, so that only left Felagund! This is the first fic I've written with Orodreth as Finrod's brother, but again that's because he was in HoME IV and V.

Very nice :) So he was strong and thoughtful in the end. Much more peaceful and less bitter, than I would expect. Actually he wasn't bitter at all. Rather like a person beyond that low, earthy world. Meditative. That's my impression. Whole conversation was so peaceful and distant to the goings, rather like three sadhu than three even princes. Or maybe that's just because they are elves.
Haughty Feanorians till the end, that's good, I love also Curufin just smiling in the answer.
A glimpse of Celebrimbor might be a good addition here.

[If it doesn't make sense forgive me, I am really tired today.]

Thank you! (And it makes sense, or else I'm tired too :) !)

This is my first attempt at a serious Orodreth, so I'm glad he comes across well. I figured there had to be something about him to make him worthy of Finrod's trust.

Tolkien hadn't invented Celebrimbor back then, or he would definitely have made an appearance. *secret Celebrimbor fan briefly looks out of the closet*

It may be that when we meet again, my brothers Angrod and Aegnor and you and I, in the Halls of Mandos, we will be able to restore that which once was. I am sorry it must be like this."

It's as if Orodreth knows what his doom will be, but sees hope beyond the end.

I've never thought of Orodreth in a very positive light, but you have successfully portrayed him here as both wise and kind. Very nice.

Thanks! I figured if I was going to make Orodreth wise it wouldn't hurt to give him some foresight (of the perspicacious rather than the Valar or Eru given type).
