This is the third part of 'Blood and Darkness', my response to tarion_anarore's challenge. This fic has a rating of 'T' at fanfiction.net, and I think 'General' rather than 'Adult', although Celegorm and Curufin might disagree.

I have to say, Thingol was pretty stupid not to surrender that stupid jewel. And after all the stories he heard about it too!! Coulda saved a lot of a people a lot of trouble...Maybe...

I think Thingol was rather daft, at least when it came to the Silmaril (and Luthien, the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, and Turin). But the 'Ooo, shiny!' mindset did run in his family - like with Thranduil in 'The Hobbit', so perhaps he wasn't really responsible for his own behaviour!

Dior was even worse though - I wonder which part of 'you have the most prized possession of the seven homicidal lunatics living on the borders of your realm and they will do anything to get it back' he failed to understand. As for Elwing, it must have been a tricky decision. Suicide with Silmaril or give it up and protect my city and my children - yep, suicide with Silmaril it is!

Resentment arose in the hearts of Fingolfin's people, for it transpired that Finrod had brought much treasure from Tirion across the ice with him

Is this based somewhere in canon?

Fingolfin looked for them in vain, for Turgon had left no word of his going.

*feeling a bit dumb*

I've always wondered about this. It's probably in the book if I would get off my butt and look it up, but alas, I'm tired....

Did Turgon really disappear without a word? I know that he did not speak of his location, but it seems a decent thing to tell Pop and Fingon at least--and probably Finrod too, since they seemed such good friends--that he was making a secret kingdom.

The resentment bit isn't canon, but Finrod bringing loads of treasure is! I figured that since they'd had to leave most of their stuff behind they'd be rather annoyed that Finrod had somehow found a way to transport all his treasure with him.

I don't think there's anything in the Silm about Turgon telling anyone that he was going, which is my only justification for it!
