Things happen for a reason

Remember that obituaries job I didn't get with the local paper back in October? Well, the new owners of the paper laid off a bunch of people a couple of weeks ago. The newly-hired obits lady was one of them. Not that not getting a job is a good thing, but at least it saved me from getting laid off after four months.

almost makes you wonder why they hired anyone? Does my college board run that paper and are completely blind to financial troubles?

Your college board sounds like it shouldn't be running your _college_, never mind anything else. As for the paper, the new owners are doing what they think is best for solving their financial troubles--laying off everybody they can possibly get rid of and making the remaining employees do three people's jobs apiece. My friend Laurel, who will now be doing the legal ads AND the obituaries, already has plans to quit. Finding a replacement with Laurel's level of competence and experience who is willing to work weekends and perform one full-time plus one part-time job is going to be next to impossible. Way to go, Star Banner.

No they shouldn't. TWENTY-SEVEN idiots apparently.

Ah I didn't see the part about them being new owners. Newspapers...getting to be a hard sell these days

Why does it take 27 people to run a college the size of Rio? And how big a pay cut did they take, collectively and individually, to help the college stay afloat? Or am I talking crazy talk?

The paper sells well in Ocala because all the retirees are here. The sister paper in Gainesville bleeds red ink because the university students do NOT read print papers. So of course they're gutting the Ocala paper and moving operations to Gainesville. The new publisher should be introduced to your college board. It sounds like they have a lot in common, and I'm sure they'd get along fabulously.
