I really enjoyed your description of the train travel into Venice! Have you been there? You did a wonderful job of making it seem real and including just enough description to make it captivating and romantic without losing track of the plot.
In terms of Sybil's storyline, I'm interested to see where it goes. I'm not sure I see Sybil as university material somehow--at least not in those days when women being in university was still deeply controversial, and the women who did go were few and deeply dedicated academics. But although Sybil says she's not afraid of hard work, I don't think she's ever actually had to do any, so I think there's a lot of potential for growth in her character and story with this plotline. Looking forward to it!
Yes, I have been to Venice on many occasions - I actually lived there for a year when I was little and my mum and I arrived by night train from Paris in much the same way as Mary did. Then I did a school project on the Scuola Dalmata with my Italian primary school. A terribly self-indulgent and nostalgic chapter on my part, I'm afraid, but I'm glad the level of description worked well! :)

Oh, don't worry- you're quite right! I love Sybil for her optimism and her drive... but she's terribly young and naive and I think has a lot to learn...
