Yes! I did wonder about that.
I don't think she gets the humour of the story, either.
The character is a former prostitute-turned-penitent, who is now in back the world again (and would like to make up for lost time!). She's a bright girl, but uneducated, with a very crude and simplistic understanding of the whole sin-repentance-absolution lark.
She's less angry with the man who wanted to seduce her daughter than she is with her daughter for not taking advantage of him for material security. (As far as she's concerned, clerical concubinage is a shrewd career-move.) It's also complicated by the fact she's attracted to him herself.
Last Year's Snows: An Education Sentimentale. The review is the latest one, for Chapter 10, The Virgin & the Harlot. I did PM the writer, pointing out that the chapter title is significant (we're dealing with an ex-whore, who believes that, if sinning ( ... )
