I got this email from the PA State Democratic Party today:
Anyone who buys a ticket to the PA Democratic Committee's All American Home Style Picnic at the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill will be able to vote on who they are supporting for the Democratic nomination in this high profile race [for governor]. While I disagree with the pay-to-vote primary election, $30 isn't all that bad. Not when they could have charged over $100/plate. But that would be a bit obvious that it was more about money and less about politics, wouldn't it?

It's certainly not out of reach. I just know that my graduate stipend is close to the median state income, and that doesn't allow for many $30/person meals, certainly not with $40 in gas to get there across the state and back.

One of the local DA candidates was having $50-100/plate fundraising dinners for the primaries this spring. I thought about going to one of the free events to talk about it, but figured it wouldn't change much so I spent the little energy I had at the time elsewhere. I'm a little glad he lost.

It's not even really a primary election, just a straw poll. Or to put it another way, a glorified fundraising event. Something that the winner can point at just to say that they got a bunch of rich folks to vote for them.

That said, a picnic sounds at least somewhat more fun than one of those $100/plate stuffed-shirt dinners X_X
