So what DID happen with that chemistry video?

Not sure. If there was a small amount of rust on the mold it could have started a thermite reaction. Any organic matter in the mold could have caught fire. Or if it simply wasn't 100% dry, some water droplets could have flash-boiled throwing the molten aluminum into the air. But these are not my students and I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure.
