AgentK (the laptop) is in for repairs; the hard drive was indeed the problem. The guy at the repair place said, "Yeah, these drives fail pretty often." Lesson, people: Back up your shit. Regularly. Anyway, he should return tomorrow at which point I suspect I'll need to purchase a lot of software (at least my favorite and the de facto office suites
