I was walking in listening to old favourites Motorhead. I've jus got an iPhone with enough memory to have more than 1 Motorhead album on at a time. I walk back into the office with it blaring out through headphones which got me a pile of ( Read more... )

of course there is the factors of 1) your hearing and 2) social etiquette.

On number 1) listening to loud music will permaently damage your ear drums and lead to partial deafness. This is easily demonstrated using a signal generator and a classroom full of kids and several adult sof various ages. I Can hear less then the kids but more than an old geezer.

2) there is such a thing as social etiquette. Other people may not want to hear your music. I for one certainly do not like hearing other peoples music on buses, trains, queues of any sort, my classroom etc partly because when it is coming second hand from their earphones it is normally tinny and not doing the music justice, or they have shit taste in music, or I don't want to listen to music right then or (and this is quite infuriating) they have it loud enough that you can hear the tinny music but you can't quite make out the tune and so it's meaningless noise.

Actually that's all well and good but

1) It's my hearing

and 2) we have a rule in work of no walkmans/ipods etc during working hours. However as I was walking back to my desk at the end of my lunch I consider that my time and space.

and 3) I don't really give a shit about social etiquette as, in the main, modern social etiquette suggests that it is alright for some obnoxious oik to walk into me in the street and me not knock the bugger down on his ass. I let them stand but not have my music.
