I remember when we put my cat, Max, down. Well, he wasn't really mine. He was the family's. My parent's got him the summer before I was born and we put him to sleep a month after I graduated high school. He was definitely *old* and his kidneys were starting to fail. He was just in a lot of pain all the time and stopped eating. It was really hard, but of course, we felt better knowing he wasn't in pain anymore. Hopefully that gives you some comfort too.
