I started knitting in November and I’ve made 4 scarves and a sock for my ipod.  So I’ve got the basics of rectangular things down.  Now I need to find somewhere nearby (or in London) that sells reasonably priced yarn, so that I can do some more knitting.   I think I am going to attempt a hat.  I’ve already used up all the yarn that I bought when ( Read more... )

John Lewis is good for yarn, but often a local department store will have a good stock of cheap'n'cheerful acrylic. Also Hobbycraft, if there is one where you live.

And you can buy stuff on-line as well, quite cheap.

Thanks. I'll have to check out the local department stores, I'd only considered John Lewis. I hadn't thought of Hobbycraft, I haven't been to one for years. I considered the on-line route, but I like to look at the yarn first - I'm still not familiar enough with the different weights and fibre types to order unseen. Do you have any places that you would reccommend?

Apart from John Lewis - or Peter Jones - and your local department store, not really. Poundland, or similar stores, sometimes has cheap acrylic, and late lamented Woolworths did, too.

In London, you have to visit IKnitLondon, even if you don't buy anything there!

Oh Woolworths! I already miss it so much, it was the only remotely local shop (I don't have a car), where I could get supplies for mending and fabric dye. Luckily, I sometimes work, near Peter Jones. I visited IknitLondon after you mentioned it on your lj. They had some lovely things there. I wondered if you had found any reliable on-line shops.
