Hard-drive

Hi - my PC has died on me!!! It just kept closing down and then it was ok (the on-switch isn't right I know)but now it's dead and the IT guy says it might be the hard-drive. Does anybody know if you have any kind of warning if the HD is gonna give out?? I mean it was fine until it wouldn't come back on
