Upping Gale/Katniss? My (hopefully unfounded) fears for Catching Fire

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings and fears for Catching Fire regarding them upping the Gale/Katniss scenes. They do contain spoilers for the rest of the books, so be warned.

I understand your worry, books to movies will exaggerate a relationship (and in the case of Harry Potter, almost create one where none existed).

I always felt in regards to Katniss/Gale, if she had never gone to the Hunger Games, more than likely she and Gale would have married. Peeta was in love with her from afar (but it's not like he really knew her) and he would never have approached her.

But what are the chances of something like the hunger games bringing Katniss and Peeta into each other's orbit and what are the chances that BOTH survive? And what are the chances that they realize how perfect they are for each other (eventually)? I don't know, that's what makes Katniss/Peeta so great to me because the odds of them finding each other were so remote yet they still did it.

The movie may rev up Gale/Katniss much more than the books do and I'm prepared for it, but no matter how awesome the movies can be (and I think they did a great job in the first one), I will always look to the book as my source.

The thing that bothers me most about exaggerating the Gale/Katniss though, is how it will affect so many other themes in the book ( ... )

I totally agree. I hated all of Peeta's lines in the film. They really made his seem weak. And he really isn't at all. I am hoping that this will change. Peeta did do so much for the rebellion than people realize.

I don't hate Peeta's lines in the film, but I do agree they watered down his character quite a bit. They made him seem a bit too weak and "love sick" than he really was.

I really think they should have made it clear that Peeta did fight with Cato - and survive, which Thresh didn't manage - allowing Katniss to escape!

And yes! The lack of focus on Peeta's role in sparking the rebellion bothers me too. He was the one to really start it all off and the film gives the impression, imo, he was just along for the ride.

I really, really hope they develop Peeta's character properly in Catching Fire, along with his relationship with Katniss, but with hardly any mention of Peeta in the recent media about Catching Fire, I'm getting very worried!

Oh, I completely agree with this post. I might save my thoughts about the discussion about Katniss' rebelliousness for tumblr because I am still mulling that over, but I also share that worry! As you've discussed, one of possible upsides to watering down BOTH Katniss/Peeta and Katniss/Gale is that it streamlines the narrative because the movie viewer doesn't have the benefit of knowing how genuinely confused Katniss is about her feelings. But, to me, increasing the amount of K/G in Catching Fire unnecessarily muddies the waters given limited screen time, the fact that K & G are practically connected at the hip in MJ, and that we know what the endgame is ( ... )
