Falling

Guess what I did this weekend. That's right bitches I went skydiving. No, for serious. Tee Hee!! It was crazy - I went tandem with another jumper, but still. We went up 13,000 ft in a little duel engine plane and then they opened a door in the side of it and people, well, started jumping out! Awesome! Is it true that you can't hear anything on the way down? And why didn't you tell me this yesterday!?

bahaha - tandem jumping looks so funny - it reminds me of those pack things where a person is carrying their baby on the front.

Did Affeldt ever tell your class his parachuting story?

Well, you can't hear much but the wind when you're falling, but in the canopy you can hear the other person talking.

What's this story, I don't think we got it.

So Mr. Affeldt went skydiving the summer before, and he wanted to go down by himself w/o a tandem jumper so he took the day-long training session (or whatever you have to do). I had a teacher once who had a similar thing happen to him. I think it was for military training or something, and he had to parachute n number of times to pass some test. I think it was one of his last times parachuting before he would have fulfilled the requirement, and he jumps out of the plane and pulls the release cord, and nothing happens. So he tries doing all the things that you're supposed to do, but none of them works. At that point he starts freaking out and figures that he'll probably die, and he has a "flashback of life" moment, during which he remembers during his training that if you actually had to land without a parachute that you were supposed to keep your muscles really relaxed, so that they could absorb the shock of landing, opposed to if you were stiff, then the shock of landing would go through your whole body and you would die. So he managed to relax himself so his muscles were relaxed, and landed. He ended up shattering a bunch of bones in his legs, but since they were relaxed, they took all the impact of ( ... )
