Today's realization is inspired by a blog post seen elsewhere (not linked here or described further because it's in a non-public setting and thus I want to treat it with discretion, but I needed to acknowledge the source all the same).

Actually, I don't consider the US to be blindly trusting in the system. I've heard stories of France where they are told to go in for medical examinations. They are only told what they need to do beforehand to prepare, not even the name of the examination, what it is for, what will happen during the exam, what it will accomplish, etc.

Ideally, I think that's the way it should be. The system trains highly paid experts who should be taking care of all the details. The patient is not medically trained, so their input is limited. Anyone who's been shuffled around in the hospital system can tell you that they need to repeat their issues over and over again to every expert and specialist they come across. The patient is no more infallible than the professional is! It's really a question of how much you trust the system... which I suppose ties into how good the system is.
