Sounds like you had a fun evening. Of course, if all British people are as fun as you, then America would be better off if there were more of you here. I've never met a British person I didn't like.

We are all universally the loveliest people you'll ever meet, and I've never met a Brit I don't like either! However, I had a British friend espousing the merits of America to me last night: the acceptability of reinventing yourself when ever you want, the money for scientific research, and the diversity of the people there.

Now K & L are in their spacious NY pad, I'll have more opportunity to discover for myself (I just got a swanky NASA an email from her at her new job out there).

New York City, eh? If you should manage to swing down near Washington DC, then you of course have the offer of a tall, dashing hippie to show you around the city.
Can't offer to put you up, anywhere, as my living circumstances are not yet stable. I'll keep you updated, though.

I can talk for england, disconcertingly so (but given good book or bad company I'll be quieter than the sun sinking into the sea).

Tall, dashing, hippie types could provide an attractive detour from NY, especially smart ones. Washington may well happen in its own right if F&H get posted there, the friends I'm visiting in Bangladesh. I think they're hoping for India next though.
