In weather like this, protection from the sun was very important. Lavender finished rubbing the creamy potion into her arms and then leant over, smearing a blob on the end of Charlie’s nose. He opened an eye, looking up at her. “What are you doing, kitten?”
She grinned. “Making sure that lovely face of yours doesn’t get sunburnt.” Lavender put a streak of potion on both his cheeks. Sitting up, Charlie pulled her close and rubbed his nose against hers.
“Don’t want you getting burned, either,” he murmured.
“Mmm. I’m not the redhead, though.” She kissed him softly. “This is nice, isn’t it? A chance to spend some proper time together as a family.” Their first year of teaching at Hogwarts was over and they had weeks of summer ahead of them to enjoy. At the moment, the weather was fantastic, too, which was a brilliant start to the holiday.
Charlie smiled, toying with her hair. “No students everywhere,” he agreed. “And you in skimpy clothing. What more could I ask for?” His hand rested on her bare thigh. Pouting, he said, “If I have to put that potion on, so does she.” He pointed at Rosie, who was playing with her toy dragons on the blanket under the shade. Rosie had turned one in April and was a little bundle of energy; it was amazing that she had sat still for as long as she had.
Lavender rolled her eyes. “Hey, sweetpea. Are you going to come and have some more potion put on?”
Rosie looked up from her dragons and smiled. She shifted into her crawling position, but instead of crawling over to Lavender and Charlie, she set off towards her buggy, which was parked under the tree.
Trying not to laugh, Lavender teased, “No point in running away. We can catch up with you.”
Charlie finished rubbing the potion into his face. “Let her go. She’ll come back for a cuddle in a minute. You know what she’s like.”
Rosie grabbed hold of her buggy and started to pull herself up. “Look, Char,” Lavender said softly. Recently, Rosie had started to stand up by herself and they had a feeling that it wouldn’t be long before she started walking without help. She was still smiling as she stood up, wobbling slightly and holding the buggy tightly.
“She’ll tire herself out soon,” Charlie said, lying back again.
“No. Wait. Watch.”
Letting go of the buggy, Rosie grinned as she stood up unsupported. “Da!”
“Is my clever girl going to come over for a cuddle?” Lavender asked hopefully.
Rosie blew a raspberry at her and then laughed. Lavender expected her to drop down to her knees and crawl over to them but, instead, she took a few tentative steps forward before falling down. Lavender stared in amazement, reaching for Charlie’s hand.
“Oooops.” Rosie pulled a face.
Charlie sat up, grinning. “Is my girl going to come over for a cuddle now?” he asked.
Lavender tried her best not to roll her eyes when Rosie immediately crawled over and up onto Charlie’s lap at top speed. Charlie picked her up, kissing her forehead. Rosie gave a delighted sigh, flinging her arms around her daddy’s neck. “Kiss!” she declared, planting a smacker on his cheek.
Lavender rubbed her back gently, straightening her sunhat with a wry smile. “That’s it,” she said finally. “We have to have a mummy’s boy so I can get some cuddles too.”
Laughing, Charlie shifted Rosie and told her, “Give Mummy a kiss, too.”
Rosie’s fingers held onto Lavender’s nose, pulling her closer. She pressed a wet kiss to her mother’s cheek and then blew a loud raspberry. Lavender pulled away, giggling, and Rosie smiled, showing off all six of her teeth.
Charlie looked a little sheepish. “I think I taught her that.”
“Really? I would never have guessed,” Lavender teased, leaning over to kiss him. She moved her head, though, and licked his cheek in retribution. “You shouldn’t encourage her,” she murmured.
“She’s a Weasley. Doesn’t need any encouragement.”
Lying down on the blanket, Lavender propped herself up on her elbow, shaking her head. “You can’t use that excuse forever.”
“And you can’t keep saying that you want a mummy’s boy.” Rosie tugged on her sunhat and Charlie automatically straightened it again, earning a wobbly lip and wide eyes, the exact same colour as his. “Do you really want another one when we’ve got this handful?”
Lavender grinned and shook her head. “Rosie’s enough for me. At the moment. Ask me next year. I might get broody.”
“Rosie’s more than enough,” Charlie agreed. “You love your Mummy, don’t you?”
Rosie looked up at him, wobbly lip gone now that Daddy had ignored it. “Wub!”
“See?” Charlie asked with a grin. “She wubs her Mummy.”
Lavender giggled and sat up to kiss Rosie. “I know you love me, sweetpea.” She gave her tummy a quick tickle and Rosie laughed. “It’s just hard to forget that you said ‘daggin’ before ‘Mum’.”
Rosie’s face lit up. “Daggin!” She twisted enthusiastically in Charlie’s arms, trying to see her toy dragons. Rosie held out her arms and whined, “Daggins!”
Picking up her wand, Lavender Summoned Rosie’s favourite dragon and the toddler joyfully cuddled it to her chest.
“Does this mean she’s officially walking now?” Charlie asked, setting Rosie down between them on the blanket. She started to chew on the dragon’s tail.
Lavender looked at him suspiciously. “Why?”
He looked as sheepish as when Rosie had blown the raspberry on her face. “Well, you said that when she was walking, I could start teaching her to fly.” Charlie toyed with the edge of the blanket.
“Fine,” Lavender said a little reluctantly. She sighed. “But no higher than, like, three feet. And if she doesn’t like it, you can’t force it on her.”
Charlie pouted. “Spoilsport.”
“Not a spoilsport. Just want her to be safe.”
“Wub!” Rosie grinned at Mummy. She held out her dragon and Lavender stroked its head.
“I love you, too.”
“No. Wub daggin!”
Lavender laughed. “Yes, I love your dragon, too.” Rosie waved the dragon and Lavender gave it a quick kiss, deciding that it would need a wash when Rosie was asleep.
Charlie picked Rosie up and moved her to the side, a little further back under the shade. She looked bemused for a moment, but then Charlie passed her the other dragon and all was right. Pulling Lavender closer, Charlie wrapped an arm around her waist. “Wub,” he teased in her ear.
She turned her head and kissed him softly. “Yeah,” she agreed, lips curving into a smile. “Wub.”
