Fred had been sitting on his beach towel for a solid twenty minutes. Looking up from her magazine, Molly was inwardly amused, not to mention surprised. She was sure that this was the longest that he had ever been still.

Ron and Ginny were making sandcastles - Ron would build them and Ginny, who had just turned one, would knock them down. Sighing dramatically, Ron would just start to rebuild the castle. George was helping Bill and Charlie dig a big hole. There was no apparent purpose to the hole, although Molly had the horrible feeling that they were going to push Percy into it.

If things came to that, she’d let Arthur deal with it.

She was enjoying their day out at the beach, but she was a little worried that Fred wasn’t enjoying himself. “Fred,” she said gently, “why don’t you go and play with your brothers?”

“Just getting rid of all the sand,” he replied distractedly, picking the last few grains of sand from between his toes. Fred looked up and grinned at her. He’d only been out in the sun for a few hours, but his freckles seemed to have multiplied. “All finished!”

Fred glanced over to where his brothers were digging. “I’m going to go in the sea,” he announced.

“Okay. But no deeper than your knees, alright? Stay where I can see you.”

He nodded solemnly before dashing off towards the sea. Molly knew he wouldn’t stay in very long - despite the sunny weather, the water was positively freezing and Fred had never liked to have cold feet.

After a quick check on Ron and Ginny - “Ginny, don’t eat the sand!” - Molly turned her attention on Fred. George would never go in the sea alone, preferring to do things with his twin or his brother. Fred, on the other hand, was just as happy playing by himself as he was with the others.

He was seven minutes older than George. Their birthday was the first of April. April Fool’s Day. She had often wondered whether this had any bearing on their personality - was it a coincidence that they were so exuberant and born on that day? Similarly, was Fred the slightly more adventurous because he was the oldest?

The differences between them were so very subtle that even Molly had to admit that she had difficulty telling them apart. When they had been born, she had been terrified that she would mix them up, so they had dressed them in different colours. Now that they were older, though, they liked to choose matching outfits. This annoyed her a little - even though she had to admit that they looked adorable in their little pyjamas with the rabbits…

Still, she had a cunning plan to knit their initials into their jumpers next Christmas. That might make things a little easier.

Molly bit back a laugh as Fred danced and splashed in the surf, sending up sprays of water. She couldn’t hear him, but he was clearly laughing. He tried to turn a cartwheel, failing miserably and landing on his knees in the squishy sand. She heard him give a shriek of laughter, attracting the attention of his brothers, but not loud enough to wake Arthur and Percy, who were dozing in the shade.

Breaking away from Charlie and Bill’s hole-digging - the hole was getting very deep as both boys were standing in it and Molly could only just see the top of Charlie’s head - George went to join his twin in the sea. For a moment, Fred stared at his brother, hands on hips, before touching him quickly on the arm and splashing away, initiating an absurd water-logged game of tag.

She fumbled for the camera. This was definitely something for the family album. Lining up the picture the best she could, Molly snapped a couple of shots of the twins playing in the surf. A fond smile played on her lips and she held the camera for a moment. It was times like this when she felt so proud to be a mother.

“Mummy! Mummy! Ginny eat sand.” Ron sounded annoyed. Turning, Molly saw that little Ginny had the sand-covered spade in her mouth. Molly bit her lip.

“Take that from her, please, Ron.” Molly sighed as Ron tugged the spade from his sister. “Gently, Ron.”

Laughing, Fred came running back to his towel; George had rejoined Bill and Charlie’s hole.

“Is the water nice?”

“Cold,” Fred said with a nod. His face was flushed from exertion. He started picking at the sand on his feet.

“What are you doing?”

“Getting rid of the sand.”
