New friends

Ah, what a good day. This weekend is the Friends of the San Francisco Library Big Book Sale--basically an airplane hangar packed with table after table after table of cheap books, and throngs of people hovering and scanning and sorting. My friends and I go every year, and then recover with lunch at the fancy vegetarian restaurant next door, staring ( Read more... )

I love David Sedaris. What about his works disappointed you? I haven't read his latest, so I don't know about that one.

Also, this is totally random, but would you, by chance, be willing to knit me something? I just went to Target today and saw all their cute scarves (they had one almost exactly like Rose's that you have the icon of) and gloves and arm warmers, but balked at the prices. I would be willing to pay for the yarn and for your labor, plus shipping. Email me and let me know, we can discuss.

Sure! Though you should know that yarn isn't cheap--I'm skeptical that it would be cheaper to have me knit something than to buy it at Target. But I'm definitely up for it. Let's email.

Well, I read Me Talk Pretty One Day a few years back, and didn't care for it. Now that I'm more familiar with him and his work, I think it was an issue of expectation vs. reality--I expected him to be a comedian, when he isn't, necessarily. Now that I know he's really more of an essayist than anything else, things might work out better. Plus, I've been listening to him on NPR, which helps.

Maybe? Ooh, we could do Isak Dinesen next year--Seven Gothic Tales, maybe? I'll let you know on the rest.

I forgot about your problems with David Sedaris. If I was the kind of person who couldn't be friends with people who did not like/love things I do, then we couldn't be friends over this. Luckily, I am not like that. I hope you find some Sedaris love. His latest book has my favorite story by him ever. (It's not Dress Your Family... though I do believe that was my first Sedaris. It's called When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and the story is called April in Paris.)

Luckily, indeed. Also, I really do feel that David and I are coming to an understanding. I have hope.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames

Possibly my favorite book title ever.

"Zippy" is great, but don't read it in public, because you will laugh and laugh like a crazy person.

Also, I think "Dress Your Family" is my favorite Sedaris collection. I hope you like it. I'm actually going to a Sedaris reading in Philly in a few weeks -- I'm excited :)

Noted. I'm really excited about it--maybe it'll be my recuperation book after The Name of the Rose.

Fun! The lady at the book sale was saying he's coming here soon, too. Maybe if I like Corduroy and Denim, I'll go.

The Archivist keeps getting pushed down on my to-read list, but now that it looks like records/archives is where I'll be for a while--at least for the foreseeable future--I should probably move it a little closer to the top. Thanks for the reminder.

Nice finds. I love me some Dawn Powell.

You know, I think I also get it mixed up with...is it The Historian? The vampire one? I'm pretty sure this one is just about libraries, though.

I love me some Dawn Powell.

I keep collecting her stuff, expecting that I will love it, but I have to admit that I haven't started anything by her yet. Guess I'll have to remedy that.
